About Us | Becoming a Disciple

DISCIPLESHIP: What does it mean to be a disciple?

Bethel's mission begins with the commitment "walking with Christ." We seek to walk with Christ as the disciples did, realizing that we do our best, we fall down and mess up, just as the disciples did. Yet each time Jesus picks us up and invites us to continue the journey of faith. As children, young adults and older adults, we make this faith journey together through the twists and turns of life, knowing that we belong to God and continually fall into the love of Jesus Christ for the sake of the world.

A beautiful song in our new hymnal embodies what it means to be a disciple (ELW 659):

Will you let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you?
Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant, too.

We are pilgrims on a journey, we are trav'lers on the road:
We are here to help each other walk the mile and bear the load.

I will hold the Christ-light for you in the nighttime of your fear;
I will hold my hand out to you, speak the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping; when you laugh I'll laugh with you.

I will share your joy and sorrow till we've seen this journey through.

Will you let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you?
Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant, too.
